Over the past few weeks, I've had the pleasure of working with an established author, editing the sequel to their acclaimed first memoir.

Orphan No More
Orphan No More

They are the author of a number of books, but the first in this particular series was Orphan of Islam, published by HarperCollins UK. It tells of the author's childhood, and a boy brought up trapped between two cultures. Born of a British mother and a Pakistani father, it tells of cruelty and neglect, kidnapping and violence, and describes a life where he didn't feel he belonged.

The book follows his life to a certain point, leaving the reader asking, "What happened next?"

Orphan No More picks up the story from that point, describing how the author felt about his family, revisiting locations from his past, and detailing how his search for his mother (believed dead) concluded.

I was originally tasked with copyediting the manuscript, and proofreading the final copy before publishing. This I did, but there was a fair amount of extra material that was being considered; the decision about whether to publish it separately, or include it in this memoir, still to be made.

I was commissioned to copyedit the additions, and to incorporate them into the final copy. In addition to the main story, Orphan No More now included a whole section covering the author's career in the British Army, as well as a couple of short stories relating to issues covered in the main text.

Having completed the editing, I was then commissioned to format the book for eBook and print editions.

In the acknowledgements, the author says, “And finally, a huge thank you to Andrew Heasman from ProofWriteUK for helping bring Orphan No More to life. Your skill, care, and dedication in editing this book made all the difference, I’m truly grateful.”

For those interested in knowing more about the book, the author describes it as follows:

"In the bestselling memoir Orphan of Islam, Alexander Khan shared the heart-breaking story of a British Muslim boy abducted from his English mother and forced into silence. That story shocked readers.

Orphan No More is the raw, powerful sequel - a memoir of survival, addiction, racism, and redemption.

Back in England but broken in spirit, Alexander faces a different kind of war. Nightmares, PTSD, and self-doubt haunt his every step. His mixed-race identity is a constant source of confusion and rejection. Torn between two worlds - English and Pakistani, Muslim and secular - he searches for a place to belong.

As he battles depression, addiction, and the aftermath of abuse, he’s forced to confront the pain of the past and fight for his future.

Spanning gritty northern streets and remote Pakistani mountains, this is a deeply emotional, unflinchingly honest memoir for fans of true stories that matter.

If you’ve ever felt lost between cultures, struggled with childhood trauma, or longed for love and acceptance - this book is for you."
