The rates that I charge for my editing and proofreading services will vary depending on the length, the amount of time and the level of editing that a particular piece of writing requires - it is a totally bespoke figure for each individual text.
That is not to say that I pluck a figure out of thin air - far from it - the base rates are guided by those suggested by the Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders (ciep), and the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA). To see their suggestions, click their links on my Resources page.
In order to determine the complexity of the task, I offer a FREE sample edit of 1000 words taken from the middle of your writing. From this, I can see what level of work will be required, calculate a timescale, and provide you with a quote for the job. You will be able to see how I work and decide if we are compatible. You are under no obligation to accept the quote, however, once you have accepted the offer, terms and conditions apply (see the link at the bottom of the page).
The Ciep currently suggests a rate of £30.75 p/hr for proofreading and £35.75 p/hr for copyediting (EFA says $35-45 for PR, $40-59 for CE). But what does this mean in monetary terms? Use the following chart to compare like for like.

But remember, my rates are variable depending on the length of the manuscript, its complexity, and a number of other factors. Either way, they are substantially lower than the rates recommended by the established bodies.
"How can you afford to charge such low prices?" I hear you ask.
I'm a fellow author, and I know how much of a drain on your budget editing can be. It is an essential service, but is often omitted by some authors to cut costs. I work as a freelancer. I don't rely on this as an income. So, I can afford to charge lower rates to help other authors.
Still unsure whether you can afford my editing?
Contact me to discuss your options. Alternatively, look for my special offers which I run at regular intervals.
For large jobs (manuscripts, books, etc), I prefer to quote for the entire project. For smaller jobs, I quote per 1000 words, per page (Industry standard = 250 words per page), or per hour.
No job is too small, however, anything less than 1000 words will be charged at a flat rate of £12.
Concessionary rates apply for students.
All quotes must be accepted in writing prior to commencement and deposits paid in accordance with the terms and conditions (below).
