Another Editing Client Publishes their Book

At the start of the year, I was contacted to provide a sample edit of a section of a fantasy (Dark Romantasy) novel. After reviewing my changes and suggestions, I was initially commissioned to complete a full proofread of the book. The book had passed through the hands of a number of developmental and copy editors prior to me, so my role was simply a final proofread prior to publishing.

As I began working, it became clear that a certain amount of editing was still required. I highlighted this point to the author who gave the go-ahead to conduct a light edit as I worked through the text.

As is my habit with editing jobs, I produced a bespoke "Style Sheet" as I progressed. The author was aware that I was going to do this, but she was pleasantly surprised by the depth and detail that it contained. Her reaction was:

“Style Sheet: Oh my gosh, this was above and beyond. More than I ever expected. I just wanted it for the character descriptions. What you gave me was so much better. Thank you for this. I loved it.”

Having completed the project and any suggestions/changes discussed and accepted by the author, I received the following feedback:

“I had so much fun working on this project with you. You’ve been so responsive to my emails and so encouraging. It was great working with you. Thank you.”

She also left a detailed review:

"Andrew Heasman is amazing. He’s from the UK but knows the writing standards of the US, UK, and more. He will work with the style you need. He offers proofreading and copy editing. He will send you your manuscript in pieces and let you do it in sections so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. Then, once you finish that section or the entire thing,

you can send it back to him, and he’ll get it formatted and ready for publication if you need that. He’s very helpful and understanding. I hired him as a proofreader - but with him having a kind heart, he went above and beyond. If he thought something was wrong, didn’t understand something, or thought it could be worded better, he pointed it out. So, he didn’t just stick to checking grammar and punctuation. He did it all! I loved how caring he was. It warmed my heart. Every time I used a foreign language, he checked it to make sure it was accurate. He also checked every location to make sure it was real. His work was so intense. He takes this so seriously. You can really see his passion in the emails and in his work. I was thoroughly impressed by him.”
