Some may have wondered why I have been so quiet on here lately. Well, for the past three months, I have been editing and proofreading an epic of a novel.

ree

The book had been published previously, but the author felt that it could benefit from a complete overhaul, a partial rewrite, and a full copyedit and proofread before its rerelease.

What you see before you is the finished article (complete with a brand new cover design).

Standing at just short of 240k words, it truly lives up to the term "epic", but for those who like an immersive, character-driven story, this is the book for you.

To give you a feel for its content, these are the author's own words:

In the Cold — a literary Cold War spy thriller blending the psychological depth of John le Carré with the haunting realism of The Lives of Others. This espionage novel unfolds across a divided Berlin, where betrayal, memory, and survival blur under the shadow of the Stasi and MI6.

An immersive, gripping Cold War thriller for readers who crave deeply human stories — not just action.

Step into a world where loyalty is tested, lives are twisted, and the past refuses to stay buried.

A boy orphaned on the icy streets of East Berlin in 1952.

A fractured mind in 1985 London.

Phillip Smith — a broken former MI6 officer battling alcoholism and isolation — is haunted by secrets from his years in Berlin’s shadow. When a university student requests an interview, Phillip’s fragile grip on reality begins to fracture, exposing buried memories, betrayal, and the brutal human cost of life behind the Iron Curtain.

Why readers of thoughtful historical fiction will love this book:

• Complex, deeply human characters shaped by moral ambiguity

• A richly immersive narrative with slow-burning suspense

• An atmospheric portrayal of Cold War paranoia and totalitarian control

• Themes of memory, trauma, and the true cost of loyalty

• An ending that resists neat resolution — because life rarely does

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Masterfully crafted… fascinating, shocking, insightful… not a book for the faint-hearted, but I couldn’t put it down.” — Amazon Reviewer

In terms of editing, it was a pleasure to work on. The author said the following in a comment in the book's 'Author's Note':

Part 2 of the novel is already underway, and continues where this book finishes. That being said, this book is a standalone story in its own right.

The author is also working on a series of books in the comedy genre.

Keep your eyes peeled for further information on those, in due course.
