Authors are probably familiar with adverts for "Free Sample Edits" but what exactly are they? What do you get? And what are the advantages (for the author and the editor)?

A "sample edit" is exactly what the name suggests - a copy/line edit of a short section of your manuscript.

But how long is long?

This will vary, depending on the author. At ProofwriteUK, the FREE sample edit is 1000 words (but it is flexible). Other editors might suggest 2000 words or less. Others might not offer a FREE sample edit (they might charge for it).

What does it involve?

In my case, you send a 1000 word section of your manuscript to ProofwriteUK's email address in MS Word format. Using 'Track Changes', I will copyedit and proofread it (as I would for a full editing project). I make changes or suggestions, as appropriate, leaving detailed comments for you to read, and then I return the updated document to you so that you can see what level of work is required before it is publish-ready.

How does that help the author?

. You get to see the level of work needed to polish your text to a standard suitable for publishing (or passing to an agent).

. You get to see how the editor works, the depth that they go to, and an idea of what the editor looks for during the full editing project.

. You get a free option to have the sample formatted for ebook (to see what it might look like when finished).

. You begin the process of building a rapport with the editor (essential for a long editing project).

. All of the above helps the author to decide whether the editor is someone that they think they can work well with, and whether they might consider hiring them to complete the full editing project.

How does that help the editor?

. It is the perfect opportunity to showcase their style of editing, their professionalism, and the quality of their work.

. It helps the editor assess the text to calculate how much work will be required for the full project, how much time should be allocated to the project, and subsequently, to produce an accurate quote for the work (should they be appointed as the author's editor).

. It helps to build a rapport with the author.

Are there any additional services available?

. Some might consider that 1000 words isn't enough. In this case, a larger section can be edited, but this would be a paid service. I specifically use a Fiverr gig for this situation. Click HERE to go to the details page.

What if I want an assessment of my writing style in addition to a sample edit?

This isn't a problem (although it is a paid service) - use the website's online form (or email) to discuss your requirements.

I see you offer Beta-reading as a service - could you combine beta-reading of the full novel, an assessment, and a sample edit? Definitely. The Beta-reading will include a thorough, detailed assessment anyway, but a sample edit can be added in addition. Contact me for a bespoke quote by clicking HERE.

So, a FREE sample edit, as a standalone service, is a win-win for both the author and the editor. And there is NO RISK involved (you are under no obligation to purchase a full edit on completion).

Why not take the opportunity and request your FREE sample edit now...
